Banana Circle

Where beauty and food production intertwine

A living landscape designed to nourish

Over the past months, I’ve found myself returning again and again to Akal, a truly gorgeous community living space. Nestled in a thriving food forest, it opens up to sweeping sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. Hard to believe the project began just 1.5 years ago, sparked by the shared dream of two lovely Italians who envisioned a place that would attract a genuine and healthy community.

Even before I arrived, it already looked magical. At first glance, the garden feels ornamental, almost too beautiful to be productive. But look closer, and you realize, that this garden doesn’t just please the eye, it feeds a community.

This aligned value is what inspired me to come back and collaborate on  community projects here, combining designs with hands on workshops. Because the way I’ve experienced it, beauty and productivity don’t compete. Permaculture doesn’t have to be messy to be functional. It can be abundant and aesthetic.

One of our upcoming projects together is planting a banana circle, a perfect example of how good design can weave functionality, ecology, and beauty into one elegant system.

Sounds fun, but…

What is a banana circle?

A banana circle is a circular, bowl-shaped ‘permaculture’ planting system designed to manage organic waste and greywater while producing food. Most commonly used in tropical and subtropical climates, its continental-climate cousin (like in Hungary) would be a rain garden.

The design is simple and clever. You dig a central pit that collects kitchen scraps, mulch, and water, and use the soil from the pit to build a raised mound around the edge. On that mound you plant bananas and companion plants like papaya, taro, sweet potato, lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, and pigeon pea, etc. Scroll to the last photos on the right to see sketches.

It works as a natural greywater filter: the pit absorbs household greywater, and the soil and the plants clean it through their grains and roots while thriving on the moisture and nutrients. The system uses space horizontally and vertically, fitting multiple layers of edible plants in a small area.

The result is a lush, productive, edible ecosystem that recycles waste, conserves water, improves soil, and creates a tropical micro-oasis with very low ongoing maintenance.

It acts like a living filter, breaking down greywater naturally through soil, microbes, and plant roots. This turns household water into a resource, keeping the soil moist and reducing overall water use.

It’s a 3 in 1 deal

Banana circle magic

Filter

The banana circle functions as a natural greywater filter. Household water flows into the central pit, where soil particles, microbes, and plant roots work together to cleanse it. Instead of treating greywater as waste, the system turns it into a resource, keeping the soil moist, feeding plants, and reducing overall water use.

Food

This small circular system can produce an impressive abundance of bananas, papayas, taro, sweet potatoes, herbs, and support plants that fix nitrogen or provide mulch. The closed-loop nutrient cycle keeps fertility high without constant external inputs. It’s a self-feeding system that rewards thoughtful design with generous harvests.

Fabulousness

Let’s be honest, greywater systems aren’t usually pretty. But a banana circle transforms something undesirable into a lush focal point. Its dense planting attracts pollinators and beneficial insects, supports biodiversity, and enriches the entire garden ecosystem. It’s practical permaculture that can also make people stop and stare.

If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.
